Bulgarian Language for Indian Students: In the Medical Course, Before It, and for a Bulgarian-Taught Degree

English-taught degrees do not require Bulgarian to start, but medical students cannot avoid it: from the clinical years, patients speak Bulgarian. Universities teach it as a compulsory subject, and run full preparatory years in Bulgarian for students who want to study in the language.

Bulgarian inside the English Medicine course

All medical universities teaching in English include Bulgarian as a subject in the first years: at Pleven, six hours a week in years one to three; at Varna, compulsory in years one to three; at Plovdiv, from year one through the first two years. The goal is practical: taking a history from a patient, understanding nurses, reading charts. Students who take it seriously get more from the clinical years in Pleven, Varna or Stara Zagora, where few patients speak English.

Questions about Bulgarian for Indian students

Is Bulgarian difficult for Indian students?

The Cyrillic alphabet takes a few weeks. Grammar is simpler than in other Slavic languages because Bulgarian has almost lost noun cases. Most students reach basic conversation in their first year.

Can I study in Bulgarian to pay less?

At the Medical University of Sofia, the Bulgarian preparatory year costs €3,700 against €4,800 for English, but Bulgarian-taught degrees for foreigners are not always cheaper. Ask each university for both fees.
