The Indian Community in Bulgaria: How Many Indians Live There, the Embassy and Where Students Find Each Other

Bulgaria's Indian community is small. The Ministry of External Affairs counted 1,077 people of Indian origin and Indian citizens in Bulgaria in January 2026: 949 NRIs and 128 PIOs. Students are a large share of them, concentrated in Pleven, Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv.

What a small community means

In Pleven, Indian students are numerous enough to share flats and cook together. In Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv they are a minority among international students from Europe, Israel, Africa and the Middle East. That makes it easier to mix and practise Bulgarian, but you will need to build your own circle.

Festivals and temples

There is no large settled community to host festivals, so Diwali and Holi are mostly marked by student groups. Sofia has an ISKCON centre in the Nadezhda 2 district. Ask senior students in your batch what happens in your city.
