Scholarships in Bulgaria for Indian Students: Where Real Money Is, and Where It Is Not

Bulgaria has no large government scholarship open to Indian students, and the medical universities do not offer scholarships to fee-paying foreign students. The one place with serious money is AUBG, which says most of its undergraduates receive aid. Once enrolled, students can apply for Erasmus+ exchange grants.

The cheapest route is a low fee

Because scholarships are scarce, the biggest saving is choosing a cheaper programme. A bachelor's at the University of Economics – Varna costs €2,700 a year; Plovdiv's Medicine drops to €8,200 from the fourth year; Trakia's falls to €7,000. Compare on fees.

Be careful with "scholarship" offers from agents

Some agents advertise a "scholarship" that is only a discount on their own service charge, or a price lower than the university's. Bulgarian public universities set one fee for all foreign students. Check the fee on the university's own page and pay only to its account; see how to pay the university.

Questions about Scholarships in Bulgaria

Are there scholarships for MBBS in Bulgaria?

Not from the universities, for fee-paying foreign students. The Medical University of Pleven states it offers none. Look instead at Indian education loans and state schemes for students abroad.

Is study in Bulgaria free for Indian students?

No. State-funded places are for Bulgarian and EU citizens; Indian students pay the foreign-student fees.

Can I get Erasmus+ in Bulgaria?

Yes, once enrolled. Bulgarian universities take part in Erasmus+, and their students, including non-EU students, can apply for a semester abroad with a grant. Medical students heading back to India should not: the NMC requires the whole course at one university.
