The Cheapest Medical Universities in Bulgaria, Ranked by What Six Years Really Cost

Ranking Bulgarian medical universities by first-year fee is misleading: some cut their fee in later years. By total tuition over six years, Trakia University in Stara Zagora is the cheapest, at about €46,000, and Varna and MU Sofia the dearest, at about €60,000.

The ranking

2Sofia University₹51 lakh€8,000 a year, if unchanged
3MU Plovdiv₹56 lakhFalls from €10,000 to €8,200
4MU Pleven₹57 lakh€9,000 every year
5MU Sofia₹63 lakh€9,950, if unchanged
6MU Varna₹64 lakh€10,000, if unchanged

"If unchanged" means the university publishes only the current year's fee; it may rise. €1 = ₹106.27 (European Central Bank reference rate (EUR/INR 106.272); Bulgaria uses the euro since 1 January 2026, 23 October 2026)

Add living costs

Living costs change the order less than you might expect, because rents differ more than fees. Pleven and Stara Zagora are cheaper to live in than Sofia or Varna; Pleven's university advises a minimum of €500 a month. Over six years, the difference between a hostel in Pleven and a flat in Sofia can be larger than the difference in tuition.

What else to count

  • A preparatory year, if your English is below B2: €4,000–7,000.
  • Entrance exam fees and, if you fail, a second attempt.
  • Flights home: cheaper from Sofia than from smaller airports.
