FMGE Pass Rate of Bulgarian Medical Universities: NBEMS Results by University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results by country and by university. In 2025, 73 graduates of Bulgarian universities sat the exam and 21 passed, about 29%, against roughly 22% for all foreign graduates. The numbers per university are small, and the record before 2021 was poor.

How to read these numbers

  • The samples are tiny. One or two students change a university's rate completely.
  • Candidates include repeat attempts, so a rate is not the share of a class that eventually passes.
  • The figures say nothing about graduates who stay in Europe.

What they do show: a Bulgarian degree does not prepare you for the Indian exam by itself. Plan your own FMGE or NExT preparation. See NMC rules.

Questions about FMGE results for Bulgaria

Which Bulgarian university has the best FMGE result?

In 2025, Pleven had the most candidates and passes (16 of 45 over two sessions), and Varna had 5 of 9 in June but 0 of 6 in December. With samples this small, no university can claim a stable rate.

Why were Bulgarian FMGE results so low before?

In 2015–2018 only 2 of 32 Plovdiv graduates and 3 of 55 Pleven graduates passed. Common reasons given by students are the gap between European clinical teaching and the Indian exam format, and starting FMGE preparation late.

Should I avoid Bulgaria because of FMGE?

Not necessarily, but plan FMGE or NExT preparation from the third year, and treat agency claims of 'high pass rates' with suspicion. Check the NBEMS report yourself.
