Admission to Bulgarian Universities for Indian Students: Documents, English Level, Deadlines and Fees

Bulgarian universities admit non-EU students through their own international offices, not a central portal. The process is document-heavy: certificates must be apostilled and translated into Bulgarian, your school certificate recognised, and a ministry certificate issued before you can apply for the visa.

Step by step

  1. Choose the programme

Check that it is taught in English and that the fee is published for the coming year.

  2. Prepare documents

Start NACID recognition of Class 12 early. Class 10 and 12 certificates and marks, passport, medical certificate, photos; apostille and Bulgarian translation.

  3. Apply to the university

By email or its online form, with the application fee.

  4. Exam or interview

Medical universities hold entrance exams; others assess documents and English.

  5. Admission and first payment

Pay the first instalment of tuition to the university's own account.

  6. MES certificate and visa

The university obtains the ministry certificate; then apply for the D visa.

Documents and the apostille

Indian documents are apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs after attestation by your state education department. Bulgarian universities then need a translation into Bulgarian by a translator licensed in Bulgaria, which many international offices arrange for a fee. Start this in spring: the apostille alone can take several weeks.

Recognition of the Class 12 certificate

Your Class 12 certificate must be recognised by NACID, the National Centre for Information and Documentation, which issues a certificate of equivalence. Its normal term is two months from a complete file, so start early; at the Medical University – Plovdiv the NACID certificate is part of the file the university reviews. This is separate from the MES certificate that follows admission.

Questions about Admission in Bulgaria

What documents are needed for admission in Bulgaria?

Usually: Class 12 certificate and mark sheet, Class 10 certificate for date of birth, passport copy, a medical certificate, photographs, and an English certificate. They must be apostilled by the MEA and translated into Bulgarian by a certified translator.

Is IELTS required for Bulgaria?

Most universities ask for English at B2. Some accept a certificate, some hold their own English test (the University of Economics – Varna charges €180 for it), and the medical universities test English in their exam or interview. Without B2, you take a preparatory year.

When is the deadline for admission in Bulgaria?

It depends on the university: the Naval Academy closes in mid-August, the Medical University of Sofia's exam is on 9 September 2026, and Pleven's February intake closes on 1 October.
