Bulgaria Switched to the Euro in 2026: What It Means for Indian Students' Fees and Budgets

On 1 January 2026, Bulgaria replaced the lev with the euro at a fixed 1.95583 leva to the euro. For Indian students the change is mostly simple: university fees, rents and transport cards are now in euros, the same currency as the fees most universities already quoted.

Sending money from India

Fees go by bank transfer in euros to the university's account. Indian banks and remittance services send euros under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme; ask for the purpose code for education. Since there is no second currency conversion in Bulgaria any more, what the university receives is what you sent, minus bank charges. See how to pay the university.
