University Scholarships in Bulgaria: Erasmus+ Exchange Grants, Discounts and What Public Universities Offer

Public universities in Bulgaria set one fee for foreign students and rarely discount it. Private universities have more room: VUM publishes a page on scholarships and funding. For every enrolled student, the most valuable programme is Erasmus+, which pays a grant for a semester at a partner university in another EU country.

Private universities

VUM publishes a page on scholarships, fees and funding, with different rates for EU and non-EU students; ask its admissions team which awards non-EU students can receive. NBU's fee page lists no discounts for non-EU students, but its fees are fixed for the whole course, which protects you from yearly rises.

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ pays a monthly grant for study or a traineeship at a partner university in another programme country. Medical students who plan to practise in India should not use it: the NMC's 2021 rules require the whole course and internship at one university, in one country; see NMC rules. The grant covers part of living costs; you keep paying tuition to your Bulgarian university.

Indian sources

Education loans from Indian banks cover tuition paid directly to the university. Some states run schemes for students abroad, mostly for SC, ST, OBC or minority students, and the central government's National Overseas Scholarship is for master's and PhD study. Check eligibility for your category.

Do Bulgarian public universities give scholarships to Indians?

Their scholarships are mostly for Bulgarian and EU students on state-funded places. Fee-paying foreign students pay the published fee.

Can Indian students at a Bulgarian university join Erasmus+?

Yes. Erasmus+ exchanges are open to students enrolled at a participating university, whatever their nationality. You apply through your faculty's international office, usually from the second year. Future doctors for India should skip it because of the NMC's one-university rule.
